Food for thought: On Versatility, Curiosity and Carving Your Own Path
There’s a saying in the photography world that you’ve got to “find your niche.” And I get it—there’s value in becoming known for one thing and doing it really well. But lately, I’ve been thinking… when did versatility become the enemy?
For me, trying new things in photography has never been about being scattered or unsure of what I want. It’s about curiosity. It’s about creativity. And more than anything, it’s about being open.
Take food photography, for example. It’s not my “main” thing. But when a chef comes to me wanting updated headshots, it’s only natural to offer more—photos of them in action in the kitchen, behind-the-scenes moments that show their passion, and yes, beautifully styled shots of their dishes that they’ve poured their heart into. It all tells a story. Why would I say no to that just because it doesn’t fit neatly into a box?
The truth is, I will always give something a crack. Because how do you know if you love something—or if you’re great at it—until you try? Some of my favourite images have come from stepping outside my comfort zone, and I’ve learned so much about myself and my craft in the process.
I know the well-trodden path exists for a reason. But I’ve never really had that kind of guidance. I’ve had to carve my own way forward, often with little to no help—not by choice, but by circumstance. And while that can feel like a struggle, it’s also a gift. It’s given me the freedom to experiment, to fail forward, and to build a business that reflects who I am—not just what’s expected.
So no, I won’t stop exploring. I won’t stop offering more to my clients when I can. Because for me, photography isn’t just about clicking a shutter—it’s about connecting with people, sharing their stories, and bringing a little joy and beauty into the world. If I can do that through portraits and food photography and whatever else calls to me next, then why not?
That’s the point, isn’t it?
